In their first year, Claire challenged 50 of her friends to donate one hat and one mitten set which she would in turn match. The challenge proved successful, and the organization was able to donate 267 sets of hats and mittens to House of Mercy in their inaugural year. Kuddly Kiddos continues their efforts to provide for children in need, adopting children in the Des Moines Schools for 2012.
During the annual winter meeting between the Des Moines Oak Leafs and Des Moines Capitals hockey teams at Buccaneer Arena in Urbandale, fans and players joined in a “Hat and Mitten Toss” event to support Kuddly Kiddos efforts. Between the Varsity and Junior Varsity games fans were asked to toss sets of hats and mittens to the ice. The Captains of the teams collected the donations and presented them to Kuddly Kiddos representatives. The event was a big success with over 400 items collected to be distributed to children in need.
